What Valletta is
Valletta is the capital of Malta and one of the smallest capitals in Europe. Built on a peninsula between two natural harbours, the city was laid out on a grid in the 1500s and remains full of golden limestone architecture, cathedrals, palaces and quiet side streets.
How to spend a day
Most of central Valletta can be walked in a single afternoon. From the City Gate, walk the length of Republic Street to Fort St Elmo and back, taking side streets down toward the harbour views. St John's Co-Cathedral and the Upper Barrakka Gardens are the two most-visited landmarks; both are within walking distance of any address inside the city walls.
Getting around
Valletta is largely pedestrian inside the fortifications. Traffic is limited and parking is tightly regulated (see the parking notes on each of our property pages). The Sliema–Valletta ferry connects to the north side of the harbour in a few minutes; local bus routes fan out from the Valletta bus terminus just outside City Gate.
